Minnie the Minx

I think this is one of my favourite album sleeves of all time. There's the angelic voice behind "Loving You" looking all fresh, natural and innocent, but have a look at that ice cream she's holding and you'll see why she's smirking like a naughty schoolgirl. I wonder how the photographer sold the idea to her: "OK Minnie, I want you to hold this ice cream cone and we're going to make it look just like a huge ejaculating cock."
The sweet "Loving You" was the big hit from this 1974 Stevie Wonder-produced album (surprisingly it was the fourth single released from it) but as the sleeve and "Every Time He Comes Around" showed she could be quite saucy too. This is very sexy number with some scorching, orgasmic guitar playing by Michael Sembello (yes, the guy who did "Maniac" from Flashdance) and a fruity, wet-panties vocal from Minnie that drips with desire (the person wailing like a crazy banshee in the background is Deniece Williams).
You can get "Perfect Angel" together with the follow-up album "Adventures In Paradise" on a single CD. Both are excellent. Alternatively there's the terrific collection Petals which covers her entire career both solo and with The Rotary Connection. Minnie Riperton: Come To My Garden is a very good fansite.

Every Time He Comes Around - Minnie Riperton

Thanks for the great find! I remember as a kid finding Minnie Riperton's album as I was looking through my mother's music collection and playing them over and over (especially the one with Memory Lane and Light My Fire). I have been intrigued and delighted by her voice ever since. Just a quirky sidenote, I just found out recently that Maya Rudolph from "Saturday Night Live" is her daughter.
I never knew that but I don't watch SNL anyway.
"Loving You" is supposedly about her and at the end you can hear Minnie singing "Maya, Maya, Maya" - she was in the studio when it was recorded.
Wow, that just hit me like a lightning bolt. I remember that part and all these years I thought she was "my oh my oh" LOL
Great track. ... I saw that record recently in a used bin and wondered the same thing: how did they convince her to do that cover? Not very subtle at all.
Minnie Riperton was a goddess (and as an atheist,I rarely use that word!) and it's one of the biggest crying shames of all time that she died so young.Although I knew that 'Lovin' You' was about her daughter,I didn't know her name,so thanks for filling a gap in my knowledge there!
I LOVE MINNIE!
