Boogie Friday

Joyce Sims was a rarity among dancefloor divas because she actually wrote her own songs. Produced by pioneering hip-hop beatmeister Kurtis Mantronik of Mantronix, her first two singles "All And All" and "Come Into My Life" from 1986-87 were both club classics, the combination of her melodies and his drum machine wizardry was dy-no-mite. "Come Into My Life" was her biggest hit but I prefer this one as it's funkier with a great horn riff and also has that great electronic handclapping sound that all the best 80s dance music had. Despite such a flying start Joyce's career sort of fizzled out for some reason, she released a few more good singles ("Looking For A Love" was great) but never more than skirted the charts. I've no idea what she's up to these days.
This is from her great debut album Come Into My Life and is probably on a gazillion 80s dance music compilations too, but you'll have to search those out yourself. This, of course, is the extended 12" version.

All and All - Joyce Sims

Wow. Way back then a friend made me a tape with a load of dancey/housey music on - it was all entirely new to me and I loved it. But somewhere, someday, I lost the tape. I never really went out to clubs or anything, and had no idea where any of this music had come from. Ever since I've wished I still had the tracklisting. Or could at least remember some names.
A few years ago I realised that Marshall Jefferson's 'Move Your Body' was one of the tracks. And now I've found one more! I'm pretty sure 'All and All' was on that tape, and hearing it again is making hairs stand up on end.
Thanks so much Lee! One day maybe I'll stumble across some of the other tracks...
I remember seeing the video of "Come Into My Life" and absolutely going insane. For some reason, though, when I picked up the album, I remember playing "Lifetime Love" until the tape broke. I know she released "All About Love" in 1990 but alas it "dissapeared" from my collection. You're a good man, London Lee.
