New Faces

I first read about British singer Jamie Lidell in the latest issue of Uncut magazine which described him as "a nu soul singer who can morph from Otis Redding or Sam Cooke into Stevie Wonder and then Prince." Normally I'd write off such stuff as journalistic hyperbole but having checked out his new album "Multiply" I have to say they weren't just talking bollocks. This is seriously good shit and deserves to sell by the shed load. You can hear samples of the whole album at Warp Records.
The Prince comparison is obvious on the single "When I Come Back Around" which is a glittery and glitchy funk number the Purple One would be proud of. Like Prince, Lidell can turn his hand to a lot of styles and though he does the classic retro-soul sound very well his tendency is to push the envelope a little. He was previously in avant-electro-funk act Super_Collider and he tweaks and messes with his songs by feeding them through a filter of skronky electronics and his own loopy personality (check out the video for "The City Don't Like You.") Like that other great British Blue-Eyed Soulster Lewis Taylor, Lidell has his own take on R&B that makes him far more interesting than pastiche merchants like Jamiroquai.
EDIT: I just noticed that Ear Fuzz posted "When I Come Back Around" last week, so here's the title track of the album instead. One of the more conventional numbers, but It's a beaut.

Nice one Lee. We've been raving 'bout Jamie for a while now. He could be a huge star.
It may not fall in with your busy travel movements mate, but he's touring the UK just now and plays The 100 Club in London next week.
Safe journey old boy, and best wished from all at "Last Night ..."
I've been in to this album for a couple of months now, I'm off to see him on Sat so I will let you know what the show is like
Looks like I'm the last one to have heard of him then. Guess it's time to hang up my hipster jacket.
Listen to the whole album on http://3voor12.vpro.nl/ click "Luisterpaal"
I'm not convinced by all the songs (yet), but the ones that are good are REALLY GREAT!!!
Looks interesting - I'll check it out as soon as I get home and could well pop along to the 100 Club next week.
Incidentally, did you see that Lewis Taylor is getting a US release for "Stoned"? - with some cool extra tracks, too. It should be out in September.
he might sound soulful but does eat sleep and crap soul? How long before he's winning the urban awards at the Brits and duetting with Elton John (oops missed the Sir). It'll end in tears!!
I thought I would also point out that Jamie contributed a track to the notorious Noodles Foundation compilation, THE COMPLETE DEATH OF COOL. It was called "Mouth Fool".
Wow, I had heard the other lead single, but this is out of control. This is Jamie Lidell?????
If you check out the experimental techno track of his that I posted on Nuclear Beef a few weeks ago, you'll understand my surprise. When I hear the name "Jamie Lidell" I am thinking of some of the most harshfantastik techno tracks ever. Not Otis Redding!
Wow. I was psyched about this album, but now I'm even more psyched. Thanks!
