Try It, You'll Like It

Lalomie Washburn had her first shot at stardom back in 1977 when she released the album "My Music Is Hot." But despite some cracking tunes like "Double Funkin'" it didn't sell - and looking at the sleeve photo above I'm not too surprised. That cover would scare small children away, she looks like a deranged poodle. With that flop under her belt she then spent the next 15 years mostly working as a backing singer - especially for Chaka Khan - before putting out this brilliant track in 1991. "Try My Love" wasn't a hit either but it was very popular on the UK Acid Jazz scene. Despite it's name the genre had nothing to do with Acid and only vague connections to Jazz, but rather than bore you with the details see "Where Did The Name Acid Jazz Come From?" and pick up a copy of Straight No Chaser magazine.
This is a loose-limbed funky track constructed from very simple materials: a really wicked syncopated drum beat, a minimal guitar riff and a sexy vocal. I'd be amazed if this killer groove hasn't been sampled by someone. I have this on the fantastic "The Rebirth of The Cool Too" compilation which is really worth tracking down (for some reason The "Rebirth of The Cool" CDs are completely different to the original albums.)
Lalomie released another album in 1997 but I've no idea what that's like. Sadly she died of cancer last year.

I don't know if this has been "sampled" per se (and I agree that is a fantastic idea), but Steinski used it to great effect on his "Nothing to Fear" CD. Thanks for introducing me to his source!

Lee, do you have the "My Music is Hot" album?

No, I'd like to, the bits I've heard from it were pretty good.
Loved this track, great voice. Pity it wasn't at a higher bitrate. "Music use it" is another great track she does on Mushroom Jazz vol 1
Sorry about that, I keep the bitrate down to 112 to save on bandwidth. And also to make you go out and buy the record yourself.
Love this site and your choices are great. This tune is SUPERBAD. Low bitrate or not, I'm playing this out until I can find either of the comps mentioned.
