Bigmouth Strikes Again
Three years after her brilliant first album, Amy Winehouse finally stopped drinking long enough to produce the follow-up "Back To Black." I was worried that she might have shot her bolt with her debut but the new album is well up to that standard. She's mostly dropped the smokey Jazz vibes of the previous album in favour of classic soul, R&B, and 60s Girl Group stylings, and at first it doesn't seem to have much on it that's as head-turning as "Fuck Me Pumps" or "Take The Box" but it's a richer, more mature effort overall - well, as mature as an album with lyrics like "What kind of fuckery is this? You made me miss the Slick Rick gig" can be. Apart from the terrific single "Rehab" the tune that's floating my boat at the moment is the lovely "Love Is A Losing Game". This is a slinky ballad with Amy turning in a beautiful, melancholy vocal that shows she isn't just some mouthy tart and can be soft and vulnerable when need be. Like her debut this hasn't been released in America and there's still no sign that Amy or her records will ever make it over here. So if you're in the USA, CD Wow looks like it has the best deal. Amazon's price is just ridiculous.

What a song. Absolutely brilliant.
Excellent album. However, having dropped 42 dress sizes in a month, Amy turned up on the much-maligned Charlotte Church Show in the Friday night post-pub slot recently. She was plainly off her jangly tits for the duration of the show to the extent that the producers slashed most of her airtime. The show culminated with Amy and Charlotte duetting on Michael Jackson's 'Beat It'!! t. Charlotte performed with gusto using her regulation chubby yet one-size-fits-all shouty vocals, whereas Amy did an extraordinary impersonation of Vic Reeves' pub singer character. Apparently forgetting the words to one of the most famous songs ever penned, Amy appears to have lost the ability to form consonants. She basically threw her head back and emitted one long vowel more-or-less in time with the song. Tram-smash TV.
Charlotte, for her part, just looked delighted to meet a female singer who gets more pissed than she does. We can hope that Amy sees this as a learning experience, rather than an excuse to dive into a bottle of Thunderbirds and Lime and never come out. It's par for the course for musicians to get mashed up, but when it starts affecting their live performance you have to say: girlfriend, chiggidy check yourself before you wriggedy wreck yourself.
And Amy, when they try to make you to go to rehab you should go, go, go.

I'll add that I've just dragged myself in from the last night of the annual Aussie Northern Soul weekender. The irony of hearing Lou Pride's 'I'm Coming Home in the Morning' was lost on nobody.
Great second album by Amy, who I once interviewed in the very early morning: it took at least three cigarettes and a pot of the blackest coffee to make her answers coherent. She looked like she'd been ran over by a steamroller. After she'd unwrinkled, we had a nice talk though.
