Hey Judie

English singer-songwriter Judie Tzuke was a one-hit wonder but "For You" wasn't it unfortunately. This was her 1978 debut single which, despite being prettier than a field of daisies on a hot summers day, barely had a sniff of the charts.

I could devote an entire blog to great singles that flopped (there probably already is one) as "Why wasn't this a hit?" is something of a mantra for serious music buffs who decry the popular success of crap records while their favourites remain unknown. As a result they turn into bitter misanthropes with a condescending disdain for popular taste (especially the ones working in record shops). But then again, when a record they like does become a hit that often becomes a reason not to like it anymore — if the general public are idiots with no taste and they like it, then it can't be any good can it? It's the sort of twisted logic that makes music fandom such a cross to bear.

I know Judie Tzuke is hardly the poster child for under-appreciated genius, in her case she was a one-hit wonder because her records were mostly a bit duff. This single is absolutely lovely though, as soothing and relaxing as a warm Radox bath. Pity no one bought it. Idiots!

I used to love this song. I always thought it was the follow up to Stay With Me Till Dawn (which I couln't stand). I think a fair proportion of blogs are indirectly about music we feel was unfairly overlooked.

Years ago when my brother's car broke down, Judie Tzuke and a mate of hers were walking along the road and they helped us push it to get it going. Nice woman, and I loved her 2nd album, think it was called Sports Car which my brother's Cortina definitely wasn't...

That's one of the greatest celeb stories I've ever heard. "Judie Tzuke gave my car a push" almost sounds like a Vic Reeves sketch.

Takes me back. I confess that I used to like Judie Tzuke and saw her live a few times in the early 80s.

Her first two albums were pretty good and there are a couple of great moody ballads on "Shoot the Moon" (1982): Late Again and Don't Let Me Sleep Too Long.

Just thought you should know.

Cheers.

That's a scary hairdo though! Looks like those 80s stylists got hold of poor Judie!

I don't know about the record byuing public being idiots-America embraced the Beatles-which is a major deal and probably the greatest ever moment.
Judy Tzuke was discovered by Elton John and works on her own terms as a singer songwriter.
The U Ks longest surviving one of this kind is CLAIRE HAMILL who never troubled a chart in spite of mass TV plugging on the Art Of Landscape and Doomsday
