And Wikipedia tells me this was the second most popular record of 1972, being outsold only by The Band of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Amazing Grace). Weird times indeed.

Ah, times were getting tough in the UK back then and it was just a harmless knees-up to take people's minds off the collapsing economy... What was really cringeworthy was their attempt at a followup - "Desperate Dan".
To my eternal chagrin this record was at #1 on the day of my birth :-(
