Unless I'm remembering incorrectly that was about 1980. It was in A Beat Concerto and that was 1983 so...
Anyway that means that Pete was only about 35!!! Bloody hell!! Five years younger than I am now!! I thought he was such an old man when I first saw that picture!!
More perspective: when this photo was taken, it was just 15 years since the Who's first record came out. As of today, it's been almost 23 years since In The City was released. Paul Weller is now nearly 52.
23 years? I was always bad at math - make that 33 years. Sgt. Pepper was a more recent album when Paul and Pete posed for this picture than In The City is today.
Another comparison: World War Two had been over for 35 years when the picture was taken.
No, I don't know what this all means, but it's still fun.
I've been playing a game in my head recently of "What if The Beatles had put out albums at the same rate as Michael Jackson?" (or any other modern pop star) and calculated that "Help!" wouldn't have come out until 1985 - and then nothing for another 7 years before they died.
"Who would be the young turk standing next to him?" I doubt anyone could fill in at the moment! Thanks for the picture, it does indeed bring back fond memories, I was 17 then and playing "Setting sons" 24/7.
I took this photo of the 'Punk and the Godfather' outside the Marquee club for the cover of Melody Maker. It was the first time Mr Weller met his hero Mr Townshend. A moment in time for sure check my website for more punk memories: www.janettebeckman.com/jb.rocks
Yeah you should have credited the photographer - come on come on. Otherwise nice post, but where's everyone's suggestions who'd be in th e pic if it was taken today? What does Janette think?
there are no icons these days .. or even potential icons .... not like these 2.
in 2010 acts are given little choice about what they can do to get 'nationwide appeal' ... same route, same treadmill ( radio 1, the festival trail, generally whoreing themselves all over the internet) no one has a chance of getting 'organically' noticed with a tsuami of media hype from hand that moves the puppet ... todays icons are the unknowns .. the ones who say f##k the 'game' and do there own thing .. chances are we wont ever know who they are...
The sentimental musings of an ageing British expat in words, music, and pictures. Files are only up for a limited time so drink them while they're hot.

Shit, Status Quo were 37 at Live Aid? No way. They've always been pensioners, surely?
