It’s just music!

In the history of cinema few films have nailed what men are like the way Diner did. I’ve never been this bad (my records aren’t alphabetized for a start) but, you know, I can relate.

What? you don't have your records alphabetized!! weirdo. How do you find anything?! Although i don't have them in genre's.

  2. londonlee says:

I do have them split up into genres but the only one that is in any order is rock/pop which are filed roughly chronologically.

Man, I love Diner. Although one thing has always troubled me about that scene, the way he picks up a bunch of 7" singles, none in sleeves, i always cringe when I see that bit.

All of mine are alphabetised and in genre, apart from the 2 flight cases one for 12" and 1 for 7" which have all of the ones that really mean that much to me and that I could grab if there were a fire.

The Fall, however have their own section.

  4. londonlee says:

My mum did that with her singles too, threw away the sleeves and stacked them like plates. Course they all got scratched to hell.

alphabetised??? genred??? colour coded???? in random stacks all over the place so it's a brain stretcer to try and remember what's where. and you find loads of unexpected treasures on the way

  6. Johnny says:

Diner really is an excellent film. "Alphabetise" is a superb word too – I need to use it more!

  7. Brian says:

OK, I don't mean tp start a war,but do you have same filing system for CD's, cassette's and the Lp's.
It seems to me that the different formats lend themselves to different filing systems.
LP's – by genre , cause you can see the cover easily.
cassette – alpha cause eveything is so fucking small.
CD's – random, casue they stack so nice.

  8. drew says:

Brian – every format needs to be filed correctly.Just randomly stacking cds is the first step to anarchy, jesus!

  9. londonlee says:

My CDs are alphabetized but, funnily enough, that was my wife's idea. She kept complaining that she couldn't find what she wanted and I said "well I know where everything is"

  10. Erazmus Lint says:

just love the expression on her face when he tells her how much the b-side of a record means to him. hahaha.
my cd's are all over the place in random little piles because i still can't see them as a proper format, and i'm slowly getting rid of them as i find the original vinyl issues..
Alphabetise, yeah. Is this just a guy thing or are there women with serious vinyl problems too? My wife would like to know..

  11. von Grumpy says:

Mine are by genre and country but I like to keep them in some sort of organizedmess so it gives an excuse to spend hours looking for that one record :o)

  12. Dane says:

This woman is a music-lover and an organiser, Erazmus. Um, however, my detailed system of organizing (by genre, and within genre, chronologically) has long since broken down under the weight of CD after CD added to the collection. I really need to reorg.

To say nothing of the fact that I need to keep on top of correctly and fully tagging my mp3s. Yeah, I have a compulsion, or I did, till laziness took over.

  13. Mayor of Simpleton says:

Wow, I am so not fitting in here, since leaving the UK and selling everything musical. my life of music is all on MP3's – it sounds bad but look at it this way, easy to transport, easy to organise by whichever means suits and things like albums covers etc look better full size on my computer screen than on a CD – and if I want to find a track I just start to type into itunes sparta fc and before I have finished it's there ready to go.

  14. Anonymous says:

Yes, great film, great clip – and then there's that scene in High Fidelity where he's surrounded by piles of vinyl as he re-sorts his collection.

Mine used to be in order of when I bought them, and this meant that when you went back to play something the others nearby would be reminders of the same time! This had to change as like you Lee, my wife complained that she couldn't find anything! She still couldn't find "what she liked" so now her faves have little stickers on them!

Alphabetical is great but where do you put A Girl Called Eddy – or 808 State?!

  15. Gerard Diec says:

Thank you for your great post, I’ve never really posted here before so i wanted to say thanks and keep up the good work.

  16. Tom G says:

I love the way Daniel Stern says “HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY!” with so much venom. Like it was a matter of life or death…which, of course, it is.

  17. james webb says:

my records are alpha-ordered and then within a specific group they are chrono-ordered, isn’t that what everyone does !?!

btw to the 808 state question, i think that should be at the front under the bands starting with numerals 0-10

  18. learn french says:

Would you be concerned about exchanging hyperlinks?

  19. There’s certainly a great deal to know about this subject. I really like all the points you made.
