Founder member of the Electric Light Orchestra killed by giant bale of hay

I know you shouldn’t laugh but “bizarre farming accident” is a very Spinal Tap way to go.

Even though I was a huge ELO fan I must admit I wouldn’t recognize Mike Edwards if he, um, dropped a bale of hay on my head (I think that’s him on the left above) but you can hear him sawing away at his cello on their debut single.

  1. There could be a soundtrack meme in this. Let me get the bale ball rolling:

    Hay Jude
Great bales of Fire by Isaac Hays
Green green grass of home by Bale Withers.

I was led to understand that he didn’t actually join until Roy Wood had left, and only played from the second album on…so that wasn’t him sawing away on the first single

I read that he was in the band from their first live gig until the Eldorado album.

The answer is out there somewhere but it seems like an awful trifle to bother the internet with.

Did you know Weller ripped the intro of this tune? See if you can spot for what..

Although I recall Weller protesting vociferously at the time that he’d never heard of 10538 Overture….don’t think anyone believed him.

  7. I was (and still am) a big fan of ELO (albeit a certain period) and when I read the story I thought it was both funny and sad, funny because it’s such a pathetic way to day and sad because I used to live around that area and I remember our young post lady getting killed when she fell off her moped straight into those horrible long spikes that they have on the tractors that cart those hay bails around. I have never understood why with the completely over the top health and safety in the UK tractors were allowed to drive down the country lanes, dropping cow shit (slurry) everywhere to catch the unaware motorcyclist, dragging trailers much wider than the actual tractor down narrow lanes and driving with too fast for safety or too slow and believe me when you are blatting down a nice country lane and you get round a blind bend a almost catch a tractor thats taking up more than it’s fair share of the road it does make for smelly pants! Of course the worse thing is the bastards who wont pull over to let traffic pass and soon have queues miles long following them which usually leads to some very dodgy over taking moves – oppps I seem to have gone of on one, Reason Number 752 of why i left the UK

  9. Feels like a terrific post. I can tell the fact an individual has took part. Thank you very much. This specific write-up is really useful and also convenient. I will be using this in order to post my internet sites. Appreciate the actual conclusion and links to site as well.
