Twice Nightly
February 28th, 2011

This great poster is from a huge online collection of old Leeds theatre playbills that’s well worth having a nose through. Featuring lots more saucy ladies, cockney comics, scintilating singers, and things I can’t quite figure out..
This must be what Yorkshiremen did for amusement in between walking their whippets and going to the pub.

That is fab – check the Las Vegas Grind albums for some burlesque a go-go tunes..
How wonderful are these.
Rhoda Rogers sounds up for a ride. What happened to ‘sex kittens’ – did they all become decrepit moggies?
For info, The City Varieties (1865 version) in Leeds, is currently undergoing extensive restoration. (Mainly to put in soft southern stuff, like a lift, hot water and flushing toilets).
It should re-open later this year. Fancy Dress and a gavel-wielding Chairman optional. (Presenting a plethora of plentious pulchritude. Or even a teaming torrent of tempting talent, for our delight and delectation. Hopefully ‘Nudes Without Nighties’ will feature.
At the same time, this venue was also running “The Good Old Days”. I wonder if Leonard Sachs ever did the intros?
As Dave Barry would say, “Girls in Cellophane” would be a great name for a rock band.
geo.
Cellophane?
Mmm, crackly. [Homer Simpson voice]
And roll on the Christmas re-opening, eh, Mr Van Dyke?
I hope they still let you take your pint in!
Indeed Beth – and that unique musty smell. (Or is that just the Tetleys?)
I just found out this week – triggered by this great post, that my great-grandparents were prof Music Hall entertainers. A singing comedy duo who graced these great old halls.
A friend of mine took photos from up in the lighting rigs of the City Varieties, they were full of dust, probably the scurf from Chaplin, Wilson Keppel and Betty etc.
All cleaned up now I would imagine.
