I resisted listening to any early Simple Minds for years due to the later years. And even though I knew some of their early stuff was good, I had dismissed them as Magazine-lite. But recently I’ve discovered the joys of Changing, I travel, Theme for great cities, Up on the catwalk, New gold dream…..
The air seemed to go out of them after Speed Your Love To Me. I used to do a pretty wicked Jim Kerr impersonation back in the day, with lots of crouching and pointing and that weird little walk across the stage…
I [and every other 16-21 year old from Falkirk/Grangemouth] saw them around 30 times between the Cacophony album and New Gold Dream. They were magnificent most of the time and had talent in spades but Jimbo’s desire to crack America and mimic the success of U2 fucked it right up. This along with sacking the backbone of the group firstly Brian & then Derek resulted in dire stadium rock pish.
Re; his dancing, I claim with some authority that hw holds the world bcakwards long jump record around the time of Waterfront, and the get in get out of the rain stuff.
The sentimental musings of an ageing expat in words, music, and pictures. Mp3 files are up for a limited time so drink them while they're hot.

I once bunked off (my positively Victorian boarding) school to see them in Rickmansworth in 1982.
And they woz indeed good.
Ah, boys, where did it all go wrong? Oh yeah, after 1983, that was when…
