Something for the Weekend

Watching the Grammys on Sunday night they did their usual “In Memoriam” thing about the people who’d died recently and in among Whitney Houston, Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Dobie Gray and all the others there was Andrew Gold. That was a shock because I had no idea he’d died. Why didn’t someone tell me???
I wouldn’t claim that he was some kind of musical giant or anything but this was/is one of my favourite singles of the 1970s.

great song…
Looks like you let him slip away.
Groan
Loved Slip Away too.
I had this single. Even then it was pretty easy to figure out that it was one of a hundred or more of those boomer anthems, by-products of the most self-besotted generations ever. The tune was great, but I kept being forced to listen to the lyrics, which always made me scratch my head and wonder, “What’s this guys problem, anyway?”
I know, I have a sister and we couldn’t understand what he was so pissed off about. I still prefer it to “Cat’s In The Cradle’ though, another one of those songs.
Hey Lee
2 brilliant singles. I remember sitting in a house in The Hamptons with Marcus, singing ‘Lonely Boy’ at the top of our voices. Hated ‘Thank You For Being A Friend’.
You obviously know his mum was the great Marni Nixon, ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘The King And I’. And his old man was Oscar winning composer Ernest Gold. Check out his fabulous ‘Theme From Exodus’, especially the Ferrante & Teicher version, Came out in 1962, what a year! Huge in jewish homes all across north London!

Hi Stu,
Must admit I never knew all that until I read his obit.
Great stuff. Enjoyed hearing that again. Impressive performance too. R.I.P.
