Commercial Break

Try telling kids today that once upon a time cash didn’t come out of a hole in the wall anytime you wanted it and they won’t believe you. In fact, they’ll probably say “What’s cash?” as they swipe their plastic card through the electronic reader or pay for their mocha latte with their phone or whatever it is they do these days.

The “How A Cheque Book Works” booklet mentioned in the ad can be seen here and it’s a beautifully-designed thing. When was the last time you wrote a cheque in a shop?

I wouldn’t say this was better than Patti Smith’s original but I do prefer Pauline Murray’s voice.

  1. Brilliant. How times have changed, eh? Today’s youngsters are so unromantic. Paying by phone indeed!

Not sure I can agree with you about Pauline Murray’s voice. As brilliant as she is/was, no one can beat the Holy Goddess Patti at her own game.

  2. The 1st ATM I used was in 1973, in Perth, Scotland. It allowed me to withdraw the princely sum of £10 daily. I read that Royal Bank of Scotland’s newest ATM allows cash withdrawals up to £100 without a card – but using a code via a smartphone. As for other modern monetary transactions, I have seen people in supermarkets paying for items under £1 with a credit card – the sick, evil ba***rds! And I also hate those swine who use 2 or more cards at an ATM. When I’m in charge, all these people will be rounded up and shot!

  3. Want a much higher level of disbelief? Tell them that their GRANDparents generation invented all that stuff…and may have thought it up while stoned…and/or naked…listening to Patti Smith

  4. I still write cheques for things like that — and bills — but can’t remember the last time I wrote one in a shop

  5. Had a plumber recently who didn’t take cheques; lots of shops no longer do either. I won’t miss the pesky things to be honest. Love the ad though.
