A Jolly Holiday

I’m off to Maine for a week with the family so the lights will be out here until next Monday. I’m going to try and stay off the internet as much as possible so you won’t be seeing me on that Twitter either. That’s the plan anyway, let’s see how long that lasts.

Be good. See you next week. Here’s a great one-hit wonder from 1974.

Download: Beach Baby – The First Class (mp3)

I was surprised to discover that The First Class were English. I didn’t think it was possible for us to sound this sunny. Bonus trivia: the song was written in East Sheen.

  1. Good trivia: I shall view my near neighbours in East Sheen (I live in Richmond) with greater regard from now on!

I always thought it was simply First Class (no The) though…

Amazing that it was a bigger hit in the US – selling their sound back to them!

    Enjoy your hols, Lee

  2. I miss Cor!! – I had an almost complete set but then we moved house. My mum said it’d be all right as I could collect all the new ones but then, a month later, the cover said ‘Great News!’ and told us that from next week it would be engulfed into Buster. All my favourite strips went.

1974 was also the most miserable summer ever so records like ‘Beach Baby’ and ‘Hello Summertime’ sounded defiant.
