Up On Cloud Nine

I was very sorry to hear that the great soul singer Dennis Edwards died last week. He replaced David Ruffin in The Temptations in 1968 just as they were moving into their harder, funkier phase produced by Norman Whitfield. Edwards’ powerful voice was perfect for this new sound and his big pipes took the lead on a string of classics like “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”, “Cloud 9”, and “Ball of Confusion.” If that wasn’t enough, Edwards went solo for a short time and cut the classic jam “Don’t Look Any Further” in 1984.

With a CV like that it’s hard to pick just the one song as a tribute. This 1971 banger isn’t as well known as the others mentioned above but it never fails to blow my doors off.
