My Beautiful Self

I do love a cover version that messes with the original and this one really sets the Pop cat among the Rockist pigeons. In 1982 Bananarama covered The Sex Pistols’ ode to selfishness for the soundtrack of the flop teen comedy Party Party (the whole film is here) in their early ramshackle, bouncy style and it works a treat.

The ‘Nanas did have some Punk previous, having lived above the rehearsal rooms used by Steve Jones and Paul Cook who also produced their debut single. Apparently Malcolm McLaren also offered to be their manager but they turned him down because, being the dirty old lech he was, he wanted them to have a more sexy image. As they went on the prove they didn’t need to play that game.

  1. I had no idea about the ‘Nanaramas/Pistols link until now, and I’ve had the misfortune to sit through “Party Party” at least twice. How Karl “Jacko” Howard’s career staggered on from this to the less than brilliant Brush Strokes is anyone’s guess.

  2. From this it looks like they did regret not working with McLaren (there is another interview with all 3 of them where they all express the same point of view)
